Common Orthopedic Procedures We Perform

Orthopedic conditions are among the most common reasons for pets to need surgery. Two procedures we frequently perform at IndyVet are TPLO surgery and Medial Patellar Luxation (MPL) repair

TPLO Surgery: Restoring Stability and Comfort

A torn cranial cruciate ligament (CCL), similar to an ACL tear in humans, is one of the most common orthopedic injuries in dogs. This condition causes pain, instability, and lameness, often limiting a pet’s ability to walk, run, or rise comfortably.

Common signs include:

  • Sudden lameness or limping
  • Stiffness after rest
  • Swelling around the knee
  • Difficulty rising, jumping, or climbing stairs

At IndyVet, Dr. White and Dr. Kloft perform Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy (TPLO) – the gold standard surgical treatment for CCL injuries, especially in medium and large breed dogs.

How TPLO works:

  • A precise cut is made in the tibia (shin bone)
  • The bone is rotated to change the angle of the knee joint
  • A specialized plate and screws stabilize the bone

This technique restores joint stability without relying on the damaged ligament and offers excellent long-term outcomes, helping pets return to active, pain-free lives.

Medial Patellar Luxation (MPL) Surgery: Stabilizing the Kneecap

Medial patellar luxation (MPL) is a common condition, especially in small and toy breed dogs, where the kneecap slips out of its normal position. It is often congenital but can worsen over time.

Some dogs with low-grade MPL may not require surgery, but those with higher grades (3–4) or persistent clinical signs often benefit from surgical correction.

MPL surgery typically involves:

  • Deepening the groove where the kneecap sits
  • Realigning the patellar tendon attachment
  • Adjusting surrounding soft tissues
  • Placing small implants for stability

Most pets stay one night in the hospital and go home with a personalized recovery plan. With proper rehabilitation, the prognosis is good to excellent, and most pets regain comfortable mobility.

State-of-the-Art Technology & Minimally Invasive Surgery

At IndyVet, we utilize advanced equipment and modern surgical techniques, including minimally invasive surgery (MIS) such as arthroscopy, laparoscopy, and thoracoscopy — whenever appropriate.

Benefits of minimally invasive surgical procedures include:

  • Less pain
  • Smaller incisions and reduced scarring
  • Faster recovery
  • Lower complication risk

Many MIS procedures can be performed on an outpatient basis or with a short hospital stay.
