Dr. Wood hails from southeast Missouri where she grew up surrounded by animals. She could always be found where the animals were, whether in the barn with her cats or out in the pasture with her two horses. Dr. Wood followed her dream of becoming a veterinarian by attending the University of Missouri for her undergraduate studies having gained entrance to their early acceptance program for veterinary school. She then went on to attend the University Of Missouri College Of Veterinary Medicine and graduated in 2013 with her best friend (and now IndyVet neurologist) Dr. Kelli Mossine. It was during her veterinary education that she became interested in oncology. She became fascinated with the medical aspects of cancer, but also with the complex relationship between the veterinarian, the client, and the patient that is so important for the successful management of pets with cancer. Following graduation, she continued her training by completing a one-year rotating internship the Veterinary Referral and Emergency Center in Westbury, New York. Following the internship Dr. Wood was accepted into an oncology focused specialty internship at the Animal Cancer Care Clinic in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Dr. Wood continued her study by moving to Texas to complete a three-year oncology residency at Texas A&M University Small Animal Hospital in College Station, Texas. Dr. Wood has a special interest in feline specific tumor behavior, with particular emphasis on the use of radiation therapy for small cell gastrointestinal lymphoma, and paraneoplastic syndromes. She also has interest in zoo, exotic and wildlife neoplasia.
Dr. Wood loves the specialty of oncology because it allows her to form a unique and close bond with both clients and patients as they work together as a team to provide care to pets with cancer. This unique relationship is immensely important in the face of what can be a very emotional time for pet owners. Dr. Wood loves the opportunity to educate clients regarding the many opportunities available to treat cancer. Her focus is to reduce or eliminate client anxiety while offering hope and support during treatment.
In her time out of the practice, Dr. Wood is an avid sports fan, with a particular affection for the St. Louis Cardinals and Blues. She enjoys running, swimming and boxing as well as traveling to new countries. Dr. Wood has a long haired dachshund Mario and calico cat Baby that have been with her through vet school and traveled the country during her specialty training. On her days off, she enjoys spending time with her pets and reading a good book.
