Twelve-month rotating internships are offered at IndyVet. IndyVet participates in VIRMP (Veterinary Internship and Residency Matching Program), but will accept unmatched licensed veterinarians if the program is not filled with matched applicants. Interns are mentored and taught by diplomates in internal medicine, surgery, neurology, ophthalmology, oncology, ABVP, and experienced emergency veterinarians.

Daily patient rounds, weekly journal club, in-house weekly lectures, and monthly CE events delivered by IndyVet specialists create the didactic core of the internship training. Interns rotate every three weeks through Internal Medicine, Surgery, Ophthalmology, Neurology, Oncology, and the Emergency service as the core of the practical training, and are allowed one elective rotation to secure training in an area of interest not provided by IndyVet specialists.

While on the emergency rotation, interns will have primary case responsibility with specialist and experienced emergency clinician back-up and mentoring. Experience in emergency is considered an important part of the intern’s development of clinical skills. This intensive training opportunity gives each intern the experience they need to expand their knowledge, skills, and confidence, and to prepare them for residency or competent clinical practice.

If interested, please send resume and letter of interest to Dr. Kelly Robertson at KRobertson@IndyVet.com.

Externships are available in our busy 24-hour specialty hospital. An on-site apartment with two bedrooms, bathroom, shower, and kitchenette allows on-site accommodations for externs. Externs are mentored by diplomates in internal medicine, surgery, ophthalmology, neurology, oncology, ABVP, and experienced emergency veterinarians. This is a “hands-on” externship where externs are expected to participate in, assist with, and perform emergency procedures and minor surgeries under supervision. Externs also participate in daily rounds and attend in-house monthly intern lectures and CE events put on by the specialists. This intensive training opportunity gives each extern the experience they need to further their knowledge and confidence in veterinary medicine.

IndyVet offers 12-month apprenticeships to new DVM graduates who are interested in pursuing a career in clinical emergency medicine. The IndyVet Emergency Apprenticeship is an integrated program that uses a case-based format to teach the apprentice core emergency concepts, necessary clinical skills, and communication proficiencies to manage a high-volume emergency service. The program consists of four 90-day units where a solid emergency knowledge base is built upon to result in a competent, highly skilled emergency doctor. After completion, the apprentices agree to an additional one year of service at IndyVet with a handsome six-figure salary and bonus incentives, working only 10-12 shifts per month.

We offer veterinary technician externships in our busy 24-hour emergency and specialty hospital. Our technician externs may choose to rotate through our emergency, surgery, internal medicine, ophthalmology, neurology, or oncology departments. The head technician from each department helps mentor externs through each specialty, giving them practical experience as well as a look into possible career paths. Our externs get hands-on training and have the ability to practice under the supervision of licensed veterinary technicians. IndyVet offers an in-house two-bedroom apartment, bathrooms, showers, and kitchen for those who require housing.

If interested, please send resume and letter of interest to Shelby Kappus at NursingDirector@IndyVet.com.

An important goal for IndyVet is to provide an opportunity for students to gain veterinary experience. Our C9/High School Externships allow students to experience our specialty practice firsthand. High school students or those applying to veterinary technician school can earn credit for participation. The purpose of the externship is to provide valuable educational experience for those not currently familiar with the niche of emergency or specialty veterinary medicine. This program allows participants to experience each individual specialty to assist them in determining if a career in emergency or specialty veterinary medicine is for them.

The Job Shadow program allows participants to experience “a day in the life” of a busy veterinary emergency and specialty hospital. The program shows students what is involved in veterinary medicine so they can decide if it is a suitable career for them.

If interested, please send resume and letter of interest to Shelby Kappus at NursingDirector@IndyVet.com.

“I had a wonderful experience during my externship at IndyVet. The staff was very welcoming and was willing to answer any questions I had. Throughout my time there I was able to strengthen my skills and learn more about what goes into being a veterinary medical professional. I would like to thank everyone who helped me grow during the learning process.”
