James R. Speiser, DVM, DABVP, CCRT

July 12, 2017

Humans and human’s best friends are invited to join IndyVet Emergency & Specialty Hospital at their 19th annual free Pet Carnival from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, July 15 right outside of the facility near Beech Grove, on Indy’s southeast side.

Attendees can browse over 25 central Indiana vendors featuring boarding and grooming salons, food delivery services, pet supplies, homemade fashions and treats, different types of therapeutics and more. Area rescues will have animals on-site for adoption.

Other exciting highlights include free pet psychic readings and caricatures (both on a first-come, first-served basis), The Runamuk Disc Dogs, a Splash Zone, face painting, a kids zone, discount microchipping, the Pacers Fan Van (from 10 a.m.-noon), tours of IndyVet’s state-of-the-art facility a “Best Dressed Pet” competition (day of sign up), and back by popular demand the Gerbeaux Dog Bakery pie-eating contest. Attendees can also enjoy complimentary lemonade, hot dogs and popcorn.

All new to the Pet Carnival in 2017 is the inaugural Dachshund 500! The just-for-fun races will take place throughout the Pet Carnival and registration is open now. Dogs that are of relative size, weight, and physical appearance of a Dachshund can compete in one of three categories: puppies, 12 weeks to 1 year; adults 1-8 years old; seniors 8 and up. All races are limited to the first 36 entries and is on a first come first serve basis. Information on registration can be found at https://indyvet.com/dachshund-500-2017.php. The registration fee for all dogs is $15 and the winner of the adult race will receive a sponsorship by IndyVet to compete in the Dachshund races at Oktoberfest in downtown Indianapolis later this year. A complete list of rules and safety guidelines can be found with registration.

Every year at the Pet Carnival, IndyVet Emergency & Specialty Hospital hands out their Professional Excellence Through Service (P.E.T.S) Award. This award goes to an individual or organization that demonstrates a variety of special qualities – outstanding community service, dedication, love, and commitment to animals of all shapes and sizes. This year’s recipient is Pets for Vets of Central Indiana for their work with shelter pets that are rescued, trained, and paired with a veteran who could benefit from a companion animal.

While the event is free, guests are encouraged to bring a donation of either pet food or a cleaning supply to provide for local animal shelters. Frequent item requests include cat food, dog food, blue Dawn dish soap, non-clump cat litter, bleach, laundry/dishwasher detergent and Clorox wipes.

All pets must be on a 6’ leash at maximum, or in a carrier.

The event will be held rain or shine.
