Veterinary Internships

Veterinary Interns

Twelve month rotating internships are offered at IndyVet. IndyVet participates in the Veterinary Internship and Residency Matching Program, but will accept unmatched licensed veterinarians if the program is not filled with matched applicants. Interns are mentored and taught by Diplomates in internal medicine, surgery, neurology, ophthalmology, ABVP, and by experienced emergency veterinarians. Daily patient rounds, weekly journal club, in-house lectures for interns, and monthly CE events delivered by the specialists creates the didactic core of the internship training. Interns rotate every four weeks through internal medicine, surgery, ophthalmology, and the emergency service as the core of the practical training, and are allowed one "out" rotation to secure training in an area of interest not provided by IndyVet specialists. While on the emergency rotation, interns will have primary case responsibility with specialist and experienced emergency clinician back up. This experience in emergency is considered an important part of the intern's development of clinical skills learned from the practical training in the specialty services. Regardless, interns always have specialist on-call back up when on emergency service shifts. This intensive training opportunity gives each intern the experience they need to further their knowledge, skills, and confidence in veterinary medicine, and to prepare them for residency or competent clinical practice.

Veterinary Externships

Externships are available in our busy 24-hour specialty hospital. An on-site apartment with two bedrooms, bathroom, shower, and kitchenette allows on-site accommodations for externs. Externs are mentored by Diplomates in Internal Medicine, Surgery, Ophthalmology, ABVP, and experienced emergency veterinarians. This is a "hands-on" externship where externs are allowed and expected to participate in, assist, and perform emergency procedures and minor surgeries under supervision; to participate in daily rounds, and attend in-house monthly intern lectures and CE events put on by the specialists. This intensive training opportunity gives each extern the experience they need to further their knowledge and confidence in veterinary medicine.

Veterinary Technician Externships

We offer veterinary technician externships in our busy 24-hour emergency & specialty hospital. Our tech externs rotate through our Emergency, Surgery, Internal Medicine and Ophthalmology departments. The head technician from each department helps mentor externs through each specialty. During this process, our externs get hands on training and have the ability to practice under the supervision of licensed veterinary technicians. Diving into each department allows our externs to gain knowledge in each specialty service, helping them decide where they want to take their career after graduation. indyVet offers an internal 2-bedroom apartment, bathrooms, showers and kitchen for those that require housing. Those interested may send their resume & letter of interest to Shelby Kappus at: nursingdirector@indyvet.com

"I had a wonderful experience during my externship at IndyVet. The staff was very welcoming and was willing to answer any questions I had. Throughout my time there I was able to strengthen my skills and learn more about what goes into being a veterinary medical professional. I would like to thank everyone who helped me grow during the learning process."

- Olivia Schilling, 2014 IBC graduate

C9/High School Externships and Job Shadows

An important goal for IndyVet is to provide an opportunity for students to gain veterinary experience. Our C9/Job Shadow Program allows non-IndyVet employees to experience our specialty practice first hand. We provide school credit for those students in high school or those applying to veterinary technician school. Our desire is to provide a valuable educational experience for those not currently familiar with specialty veterinary medicine to enlighten students about this niche of the veterinary industry. This program allows students or shadowers to experience each individual specialty in hopes to assist them in determining if a career in specialty veterinary clinical medicine is for them.
